August 29 marked the start of an eventful year for the School of Health Sciences.
The first event, the launch of the School of Health, Health and Wellness Sciences, included a panel discussion with Wesley Bruce, Counseling Center Deputy Director, Rebecca Glover, Counseling Center Deputy Director, Moses Ikiugu, occupational therapist and professor and Kelly Bass, associate professor and chair of social work at the University of South Dakota.
The panel discussion covered many topics including upcoming SHS Pet Therapy events in November, how to help a friend, the importance of a connection to nature, and general advice for students.
Bruce’s dialogue on the panel covered a variety of topics. His first general council for students.
“Do small things daily to improve your mental health. Mind and body are connected. Support your body knowing it supports your mind and support your mind knowing it supports your body. Take walks, develop hobbies, find a group of friends,” Bruce said.
His final piece of advice moved away from the external things students can do to something internal.
“Take care of yourself as you deserve and learn radical self-compassion,” Bruce said.
Ikiugu’s main advice was to lead a well-balanced life, so that mind and body are supported, to have a personal mission statement and a goal to stay motivated and motivated.
His last piece of advice was: “that’s it, enjoy this life”.
“Find something you’re passionate about every day,” Glover said in his first piece of advice.
When the panel was asked how to help a friend, she replied, “Ask them if they want advice or just someone to listen to. They often just need someone to listen to them.
Asked about the connection to nature, she suggested that when you walk around campus, you pick up details and notice things. His last piece of advice was to do a daily check-up on yourself.
Bass’ first recommendation was to “find support systems to better deal with adverse situations.” Know when to reach out.
He added that students often experience “pressure to experience and many decision-making dilemmas. Feel free to not get involved sometimes. Do what works for you.
His final advice was to walk mindfully on campus, occasionally taking different routes to better familiarize yourself with and feel more comfortable on campus.
The health and wellness kick-off ended with a raffle where a few people in the crowd won goody bags and a reminder of the many events at the School of Life Sciences. health coming the first, second and third Tuesdays of September, October and Nov.
