The Pet Health and Wellness Company ooffers shelter and share vet-recommended tips to help keep animals safe and cool
SAN DIEGO, July 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — As temperatures soar across the country, Petco Health and Wellness Company, Inc. (Nasdaq: FRAME) welcomes leashed pets of all breeds, shapes and sizes to pet care centers nationwide, where they and their families can seek refuge from the extreme heat. They can also stay hydrated by having access to fresh, clean, safe water at Petco locations during regular business hours.
“Communities all over the world are feeling the effects of the heat wave, and that includes our beloved pets,” said Petco’s chief veterinarian. Dr. Whitney MillerDMV, MBA, DACVPM. “It’s essential that pet parents know how to recognize any signs that their furry family members may be suffering from dehydration or heat exhaustion, and how to help them stay cool and hydrated. I’m proud that Petco Animal Care Centers open their doors to provide pets and their families with a safe haven where they can retreat, rehydrate and pick up cooling solutions while on the go this summer.
What Pet Parents Should Know, According to Dr. Miller:
- Prioritize hydration: Pets should always have access to fresh, clean, safe water. Petco Animal Care Centers offer fresh drinking water for pets in disposable water bowls, which helps limit the risk of disease transmission. Pets can also access shade at Petco locations, as just a few minutes of direct sun exposure in extreme temperatures can put them at risk of heat exhaustion.
- Recognize the precautions: Signs of overheating and dehydration in animals include panting, drooling, deep or rapid breathing, weakness, disorientation and vomiting. If pets begin to exhibit any of these symptoms, immediately move them to a cool, shaded area, give them fresh water, and contact a trusted veterinarian if symptoms worsen. Just as children should not be left unattended in a car, pet parents should not leave their pets in a car in hot weather, as temperatures can soar within minutes.
- Adjust the walking routine: Prioritize walks during cooler times of day and remember that sidewalks can get hot for pets’ paw pads. Look for cooler surfaces like dirt or grass to help keep pets comfortable. If you can’t comfortably place your hand on the ground for at least seven seconds, it’s too hot for dogs’ paws.
- Stock up on summer essentials: Products such as boots for paw protection, paw balm, travel bowls, refrigerated beds And toys that can be frozen can help keep pets safe and happy all summer long.
- Freshen up with a comb: Follow up regularly grooming to help puppies stay cool in hot weather. This is especially important for dogs with long or thick coats.
