We received a generous gift courtesy of Tito’s Craft Vodka, known as Dog Lovers’ Vodka, to support our valuable community programs that keep pets in their loving homes. With Tito’s support, we can lend a helping hand to those in need. Below is an impact story worth sharing to highlight the importance of our support programs. ๐
“Working as a special education teacher and animal lover, I have had many pets in my classroom over the years and rabbits have always been on my interest list. Then, in June 2023, I came across a Kijiji ad from a lady who was desperate to rehome two bonded 8 week old male rabbits. She mentioned that she was leaving town and needed them to leave in the morning. I was very afraid that they would be left free to fend for themselves, so I drove across town and picked them up.
About a month after getting the rabbits, I noticed that they were mating a lot. Not sure if it was just two brothers establishing a hierarchy or not, I took them to the vet for a check-up. It turned out that my two โmaleโ rabbits were actually a boy and a girl. The vet informed me that she would be shocked if there wasn’t a litter on the way.
I left the vet and sat in my car, I was completely overwhelmed. What had I gotten myself into? I couldn’t house a litter of rabbits, nor afford to provide them with the surgeries they would need to prevent future litters. I had to find them a new home before this little girl gave birth. I spent the next week constantly on the phone. I contacted every pet store, rescue society and shelter for hundreds of miles, desperate for support options, and found that it was almost impossible to return these little bunnies, because all the shelters and sanctuaries are operating beyond capacity. There is simply no room in shelters with the level of need in our city and surrounding areas.
They offered the financial support necessary for the rabbits to undergo the necessary surgeries to prevent future litters. Even though it turned out that the female was not pregnant, it was only a matter of time before she was. Without AARCS, I don’t know what I would have done. With no space in shelters and no budget to sterilize rabbits, I felt truly helpless and overwhelmed.
It’s now been six months since I rescued these two sweethearts from Kijiji, and they have become a wonderful addition to my home and will hopefully one day be members of my class family. Without AARCS I’m not sure what their fate would have been, what I do know is that the people I have worked with through AARCS (especially Amy) exude the most wonderful compassion and empathy for these vulnerable animals. They work tirelessly every day to defend, care for and protect these animals and my heart is full of gratitude.
Bunny and Bun Bun send their love and thanks.
