And this year is no different! For 2023, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and Vagabond have dug through their databases and compiled all the hottest and most popular dog names paw-The tenants named their dogs.

This year, Rover has seen many dog ​​name trends. Some might surprise you, but others might not. Find out if your dog’s name was inspired by these 2023 trends!

1. Nostalgia for the 90s

That’s right! If you think that only fashion trends from the 90s and early 2000s are back this year, you are wrong! Obviously, dog parents need to match their fashion sense with their dog’s name.

This year, Rover reports that among ’90s-inspired names, the most popular dog name is Alanis (Morisette), up 547%. Furthermore, paw-renters make sure their dogs know they spice up their lives by naming them Ginger spice (up 47%).

Other famous names from 90s pop culture that are trending this year include Drew Barrymore (up 297%) and Furby (up 27%).

  • Beer (up 330%)
  • Green beans (up 217%)
  • Cheerios (up 198%)
  • S’more (up 157%)
  • Tiramisu (Up 122%)

A dog named after a cheese? Yes please! Rover reveals that charcuterie-inspired names are very popular this year. Stilton takes center stage and grows by 198%. It is then followed by Quince (up 131%), fig (up 17%), Prosciutto (up 14%), and Brie (up 2%).

3. Sports

It’s a known fact that Americans LOVE football-inspired names! So this year, some of the most popular dog names included well-known players and high-profile teams.

This year’s #1 sporting dog name is Kelce (up 135%) thanks to the Kelce brothers making Super Bowl history. And let’s not forget the fact that Travis Kelce is currently dating the world’s biggest pop star (hint: Taylor Swift), which may have contributed to this trend.

This year, Barbie really was everything! Rover reports that for the first time, Mattel appeared on the dog list. Ken is up 79% while Barb is up 12%.

While Max. remains the AKC’s most popular dog name for male dogs, the same cannot be said for Rover’s list. Because for the first time in 10 years, the name Max. was dethroned by Charlie.
