Mountain Glory Quilters Guild Meeting will be held today at noon at St. Mark’s Methodist Church on US 70 in Pleasant Gardens. Block kits for next year’s raffle quilt will be distributed after the meeting.
The Arrowhead Artists and Craftsmen League at Old Fort will offer a class titled “Art for Wellbeing” with Lynn Underwood. The class will take place on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for A3L members, $30 for non-members, plus a $10 supply fee. Through creating art, students can tap into their inner knowing. In general, the act of creating art is calming, satisfying, and puts us “in the moment.” This course will be offered once a month. Mercy Fund Animal Rescue is hosting an evening of entertainment to raise funds for animal feed and veterinary care. The event is called Tito’s for Paws and will take place Thursday, November 9 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Marion Depot, 45 Depot St. Tickets are $15 and include a barbecue meal consisting of meat, two sides, dessert and a non-alcoholic drink (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) Tito’s cocktails will be available for purchase. The course will take place Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $20 for A3L members, $30 for non-members, plus a $10 supply fee. Come learn how to create two different versions of these origami books. On Friday, November 10, all McDowell County residents Seven convenience centers and the transfer station will be closed on Veterans Day. On Saturday, November 11, they will resume their normal operating hours. The seven convenience centers will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the transfer station will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. To accommodate the Friday closure, all seven convenience centers will be open on Thursday, November 9. from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the transfer station will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For questions, call Dewayne Riddle at 828-659-2521.
East Marion United Methodist Church, 210 Baldwin Ave. in Marion, will host a bazaar on Saturday, November 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature a white elephant room, bake sale, crafts, lots of homemade jellies, hot dogs, desserts and drinks. . A queen-sized homemade quilt will also be sold.
Historic Carson House will host a Christmas market on Saturday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be baked goods, vintage items, Christmas gifts, crafts, holiday decor and much more.
The County Veterans Day Program will be held at the Marion Senior Center on Saturday, November 11 at 11 a.m. It is presented by the American Legion Post 56 of Marion. Veterans and their families will be recognized and service flags will be presented. Special music will be presented by the Foothills Community Band and County Veterans Affairs Officer David Byrd will give a brief presentation explaining the services available as well as recent system upgrades. The DAR will also participate. With weather uncertainties, the program will take place entirely indoors. As a courtesy, please reserve closer parking spaces for disabled and older people.

It will take place on Saturday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $40 for A3L members, $50 for non-members, plus a $25 supply fee. No experience necessary for this course. You send a photo of the animal you want to paint to Hines at treetopmagic@gmail.com and she draws the animal on an 11-by-14-inch canvas, with each section marked with the color you will use. It’s as simple as painting by numbers as a kid and Lisa will guide you through the process with brushstroke examples and blending techniques. Newcomers and friends in McDowell County will host its monthly membership meeting on Tuesday, November 14 at 11 a.m. The lunch meeting will be held at the Marion Community Building, 191 N. Main St. in downtown Marion. This month’s lunch will be catered by Burrito Brothers. The cost of lunch is $15 per person. Guest speaker will be Kim Moran who will speak about the ghosts of McDowell County. Founded to provide an opportunity for newcomers to the area to meet others, form lasting friendships and be part of the community, membership is open to all women in McDowell County and the surrounding area. There will be interest in cattle judging meeting on Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m. at the NC Cooperative Extension Office, 60 E. Court St., Marion (on the second floor). You can enter through the employee entrance on Garden Street. The Livestock Judging Meeting is open to youth ages 8-18 beginning January 1, 2023. The course will take place on Saturday, November 18, from noon to 5 p.m. The cost is $35 for A3L members, $45 for non-members, plus a $14 supply fee. Learn how to build a mosaic stained glass window on a form. The mosaic tree sits on a wooden base that holds a votive candle that can also be used with battery-operated string lights.
