NEWTOWN BOROUGH – This year’s Newtown Halloween Parade brought out the fun and spooky side of the season with several hundred parents and children participating.
Everyone was there, from superheroes to Mother Goose, Goldilocks and Alice in Wonderland. Even an aviator came to land at Stocking Works for the parade.
The Slavtcheff family, as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion and the Wicked Witches of the East and West, also appeared straight out of the movie “The Wizard of Oz.”
The Queen of England, with her all-too-familiar wave, and ET who returned to Earth to collect Reese’s Pieces stood out from the crowd. And Andrew McNamara as Sam from the movie “Trick ‘r Treat” brought some serious Halloween chills to this year’s Halloween gathering.
Dressed in costume, members of the Council Rock High School North Marching Band set the tone for the event, playing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as they led a parade of children, adults, pets and costumed company and families on a walk through town, from the storage works to Brian Gregg Park.
Along the way, State Street merchants, shoppers and residents watched Halloween pass, many marveling at the creativity that is always part of this local parade.

Several firefighters and police officers, Batman, characters from the films “Frozen” and “Hotel Transylvania” and even a humpback whale also joined the march.
At Brian Gregg Memorial Park, the group performed selections from this year’s show – 102.3 FM CRN The Rock – with the songs “Eleanor Rigby,” “My Way” and “Thriller.”
After the show, Newtown Borough Recreation Board members Tracy Osecki and Jenna Ball announced the winners and awarded prizes to the winners of this year’s costume contest.
The costumes were judged by Newtown Borough Police Officer Rubia Ebert, Mayor John Burke, Newtown Borough Clerk Judy Musto, and Ball.
“The costumes were exceptional this year. They were really creative,” said Mayor Burke. “A lot of them were homemade. They weren’t store-bought. And you could see a lot of thought had gone into it. It was really fabulous,” he said.
“And the Recreation Council once again did a great job organizing this,” Burke added. “It was very well organized and the parade itself was great. It was great to see the locals come out on State Street and watch it. It was fun. Overall it was an outstanding day.”
