Do it yourself shows like “Fixer Upper,” “Flip or Flop,” and “Good Bones” have everyone wanting to try their hand at fixing their own home. The only difference is that the participants in the shows have accumulated experience, contractors do most of the work, and lenders fund their camera expenses.
The average person flies almost alone, probably with a reluctant parent who is desperately trying to keep expectations realistic. Alex D’Alessio is one of those ordinary people who has a reluctant relative, in this case his wife. The amateur handyman runs the TikTok page Actual renovations and has gone viral on social media as he tries to renovate his townhouse in the most relevant way possible, full of errors and redesigns.
There is no perfect transition with D’Alessio and the projects he works on. He learns most things from YouTube, which has been dubbed “YouTube University” by him and those who use the platform to learn new skills. (I was a student myself and was learning how to disassemble and clean a lawnmower carburetor. You can learn just about anything on the site if you’re brave enough.)
D’Alessio recently spoke to CBS Matinees on his home improvement adventures, giving insight into how his approach made him the do-it-yourself king. Before becoming a full-time content creator, D’Alessio had never used power tools. He worked in a company and earned a living wage, so his wife and mother-in-law were skeptical of his choices.
“I gave it six months. And I said that by March 2021, if you don’t have anything planned or the situation doesn’t improve, you’ll go back to work,” said the wife of From Alessio to CBS.
Fortunately, the paid partnerships began to arrive and he soon began to earn more money than in corporate America. There is something refreshing and realistic about watching a novice learn to craft. It gives you hope that you will also be able to undertake projects. In the interview below, you can see him trying to help the CBS anchor with a project that, unsurprisingly, requires YouTube’s help.
