A dachshund named Crusoe was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease and required two surgeries. The 13-year-old dog also had to undergo hydrotherapy sessions. These sessions aimed to strengthen his hind legs, which he had lost use of before the operations. However, the sessions only took place once a month, which slowed Crusoe’s progress. To help the dachshund recover faster, his human built him a water treadmill that he could use at home.

In a TikTok video posted on @crusoe_teckel, Crusoe can be seen using the water treadmill at home. After just a week of training, the Dachshund human said there was a noticeable improvement. A caption accompanying the video reads: “If your dog is having #IVDD or back surgery, build it up! It is one of the best rehabilitation tools for building strength and stimulating nerves.
Indeed, hydrotherapy can be a powerful tool in a dog’s recovery after surgery. The buoyancy and resistance of water can help strengthen muscles while cushioning joints. TikTok viewers loved seeing Crusoe’s DIY water treadmill. The video of the dachshund’s exercise received more than 25,000 likes on TikTok.
