If you have a dog, you know they are the best companions. Dogs celebrate our happiest times and are also by our side during our most difficult times. Artist Anneli Kirbyaka AnneliFelts, commemorates beloved pups in her custom 3D dog portraits created using the needle felting technique. The portraits feature a front view of the subject done in a style that combines realism with Kirby’s artistic flair. Set in frames, the sculptures protrude from their edges to give the impression that they are about to dive into real life.
Kirby took up needle felting to create portraits of his two dogs. “I started out trying to make the little hand-held sculptures that are popular with most felt artists and they weren’t turning out the way I wanted,” she tells My Modern Met, “and I don’t didn’t really know what to do with it.” Wanting to add “something fun” to her gallery wall, she framed the pieces and loved the result. The combination of dimensionality and grounded surface makes it easy to display the pet’s portrait while allowing a rich view of the dog and the artist’s work.
Kirby has cultivated his own style by not trying to capture every detail of a dog. “There are incredibly realistic pieces made by amazing felt-tip artists and my pieces are kind of cartoonish,” she explains. “Some artists create wire frames to lean on, allowing their sculpture to match the photo reference exactly. I do my portraits freehand so they aren’t as precise.
Its objective is rather to highlight the intangible. “My goal is to capture the personality of the dog while keeping my own style. I think I developed this art, so it is unique to me and I hope my clients will enjoy it.
