Alexis Chisme is a third generation breeder of German Wirehaired Pointers After Hours in Reddick, FLorida. She spent her entire young life of 17 years with the breed, attending dog shows with his mother from a young age.
AKC: How did you get started in dog breeding?
Alexis: My grandparents acquired their first German Wirehaired Pointer after lifting Boxers And Brittany for years. My grandmother and my mother taught me the importance of preserve the breed standard and keep the breed healthy by perform THE health tests recommended by the parent club.
What is the most important thing to know about your breed?
German Wirehaired Pointers are impatient–has–please, faithful and versatile companion. You can’t help but fall in love with their clownish personality.
How has AKC Marketplace helped you find puppy buyers?
AKC Market helps educate buyers before they make decisions about which breed is best for them. I have found that puppy buyers are more informed and aware of the breed standard, temperament and traits.
What is your favorite question to ask potential puppy buyers?
“Are you ready to have another child in your life?» I ask this question because GWPs are a lot like children. They like to be apart of the family.
What are the main qualities you look for in potential owners?
Overall, my main priority is that the dog is loved. I want them to have the best opportunity possibleies in life. Of course, I also encourage participation in events via AKC.
What is the best advice you would give to beginning breeders?
Taking health tests is one of the most important things to do before breeding. I strongly encourage this to be done to help preserve the future of the breed. Learn to know pedigrees and communicating with other breeders is a great way to gain knowledge about the different bloodlines and what would help maintain the integrity of the breed.
Do your dogs participate in AKC sports?
Yes, especially in conformation. We encourage new owners to find a “job” for their German Wirehaired Pointers, such as hunting, dock diving, agilityAnd obedience. Over the years we have had many of the best GWPs in agility, obedience, conformation and hunting.
What do you like most about breeding dogs?
I enjoy many aspects of breeding. Developing friendships with puppy breeders and owners is definitely one of my favorites. They become family and support each other along the way. Watching the dogs grow from the whelping box to the ring and field is also a great feeling.
Do you have a favorite breeding story?
After many years of breeding, it is difficult to choose my favorite breeding story, because the results are many and wonderful. Watching the dogs I have raised successfully compete on venues while becoming loving companions to their owners is what keeps me going. I have raised and owned many phenomenal dogs, who have become on earn more than I dreamed of. I am very lucky to have such dedicated owners who allowed their dogs to shine. Additionally, I have gained many friends who share the same love for German Wirehaired Pointers.
