Poppet is a 3 year old female Hound Cross. She was adopted almost three years ago after she and her siblings were found abandoned.
Since November 2020 she has been living with a lovely Somerset-based family who have shown her nothing but kindness and security, but unfortunately they have decided that Poppet needs a different type of home, and she doesn’t. . able to offer him.
We are therefore looking for a new permanent home for her. The main reason Poppet needs a new home is his anxiety.
Poppet is not a brave dog and she doesn’t like to go further than her usual walks, but she also doesn’t like to be left alone so someone always stays with her when the rest of the family goes out.
They really want to be able to include Poppet in their adventures, but her nervous nature means she isn’t confident going to unfamiliar places where there are lots of people or where she needs to stay ahead.
Apart from this, Poppet is a much loved member of the family and is described as a wonderful dog. She is gentle, kind, great with kids, is well behaved on leash, has excellent recall, is very friendly with other dogs and people, and generally has the potential to make a very happy family.
However, the current family dynamic simply isn’t working for her or her family. Poppet loves cuddles more than anything in the world. She loves to be fussed over and would happily put up with it all day – she also likes to lean on you, sit on you or nudge you with her paw for more pets.
Poppet also loves sunbathing, treats (especially chicken) and walks in the quiet countryside. She loves to lounge around all day, but needs a good walk at least once a day and loves running in open spaces. But she doesn’t like the rain.
Poppet is a very intelligent and sensitive dog, she is very aware of emotions and loves people. She loves spending one-on-one time with people and is very relaxed, just hanging out or pottering with someone in the garden all afternoon.
Poppet also loves to sleep and rest under his blanket, completely covered – head and all! If she’s lying in bed whining, she wants you to put her blanket over her. One huge change that we think could benefit Poppet would be the addition of another dog.
It is very possible that Poppet’s anxiety can be alleviated by the company of another dog to help him feel more confident, but the dog in question will need to be balanced and sociable. Another nervous dog would only exacerbate the situation.
Poppet loves other dogs and her favorite thing is to be chased by them. She can be intimidated by dogs much larger than her, very bouncy or by a large group of dogs, but she has never shown the slightest ounce of aggression and a dog of similar size and energy to her might proving to be a brilliant friend to Poppet.
Poppet is spayed, house and crate trained, she knows basic commands, is highly trainable and generally obedient, she is also food motivated and very eager to please.
In a slightly different home environment, Poppet will be a dream. Her family has been distressed by this decision, but ultimately they feel that they and Poppet are limited by the current setup and that she needs something that they can’t give her. They would love nothing more than to find her a forever home where she will be adored.
