A viral TikTok video offers advice on what to do if a dog becomes unresponsive. Although many people know how to perform CPR Among humans, fewer people know what to do if a beloved pet suffers a medical emergency. However, a video shared on the TikTok account @cassie_miniaussie aims to change that.
@cassie_miniaussie Video inspired by the ACLS class on CPR for a dog. Cassie was a paid actor💕 #dogcpr #educationdog #nursinglife #cutedogs
In the video, a thumbnail Australian shepherd named Cassie pretends not to respond on the kitchen floor. His human comes in and demonstrates the steps to perform CPR. The video was inspired by an Advanced Cardiovascular Life study Support class the poster had attended. The video is intended to show how CPR should be performed on medium-sized dogs. Other videos on the channel show the different steps for performing CPR on dogs of other sizes. According to the video, the steps to perform CPR on a medium-sized animal canine are:
- Check if the dog is breathing by feeling its throat and the nose.
- Locate their pulse under the left elbow, approximately where their heart is.
- Make sure the dog’s airway is not blocked by a foreign object.
- Begin CPR by crossing your hands over each other.
- Place hands on area where pulse was found.
- Begin compressions. The video advises using the rhythm of the popular song “Baby Shark” to time the compressions.
- After 30 compressions, perform 2 breaths. Make sure the dog’s mouth is completely closed and breathe through its nose.
- Repeat until veterinarian help can be obtained, or until the dog begins breathing on its own again.
Although people should know how to perform CPR on a dog, veterinarians caution that CPR is only effective in rare cases. Indeed, the American Veterinary Medical Association has compiled data that shows that only about six percent of dogs and cats who receive CPR survive.
Although the video went viral for its strong content, racking up over 422,000 likes, many comments pointed out how impressive Cassie’s acting skills were. “She’s such a good little actress!! She looks so happy with her performance,” Parker Roberts wrote. Kettu J agreed, saying “Your dog is such a good little actor,” before continuing, “and it was very clear and helpful information, Thanks a lot !”
