While most people know the exact location and function of a dog’s penis, many dog owners are unfamiliar with the medical term “paraphimosis.” Occurring when the glans, or the penis itself, is stuck in an outward position, paraphimosis can range from very unpleasant to downright dangerous. As with all questions regarding your dog’s health and well-being, we recommend that you take a close look at his anatomy and behavior to know when things are going wrong.
The essential and the serious
Most of the time, a dog’s penis resides comfortably inside a sheath called the foreskin (think of it as a foreskin). This outer part of their private parts is fully exposed at all times, especially when they go to the bathroom.
Its primary function is of course during sexual intercourse. During mating, the glans leaves the sheath, or foreskin. Ejaculation engorges the base of the penis, the bulbus glandis, which helps keep a sexual couple connected for 15-20 minutes after the act.
neutered dogs have fewer opportunities to call the glans into action, so it’s just as normal to never see the red, shiny part of the glans outside of the foreskin.
Perfectly normal, until it’s not
After ejaculation, the glans can be temporarily held in an outward position for several minutes. However, if it lasts more than 20 minutes (more or less), the glans could get stuck.
The inability to cover the glans is a condition called paraphimosis. It can be directly linked to fairly simple or complex causes, including:
- Excessive attention to the area (licking, scratching, etc.)
- A congenital malformation of the glans or foreskin
- Tumor
- Neurological problems
- Hair wrapped around the glans
- Trauma
Left alone, the glans may take on a different color and/or appear dry and irritated. It can start out uncomfortable, but can lead to serious complications including infection, necrosis, and can lead to difficulty urinating.
critical assistance
Experienced and confident dog owners know exactly when and how to intervene. It is essential to reduce any swelling and slowly push the glans back into the foreskin. Lubrication is essential for this process. Waxing or other obstruction may be required.
Persistent problems affecting a dog’s penis can eventually lead to corrective surgeryespecially if the pathology is linked to a malformation or a congenital anomaly.
A part of it all
A dog’s penis can be easy to overlook, but if there are any issues affecting its function, comfort, or health, you need to pay close attention.
