Pet health monsoon needs extra care because like humans, your furry companions can also fall prey to monsoon diseases. In addition, it often happens that due to incessant rains, people are reluctant to take their pets out, fearing for their health and fearing getting soaked. However, it is important to note that without its daily dose of fitness, your dog’s immunity as well as mental health may suffer. Dogs should be fed a fresh, homemade diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, calcium, fiber, vitamins and other important nutrients. Monsoon also requires a proper skin care routine for your fur babies as fungal infections due to poor hygiene can make their skin red, itchy and full of rashes. Also be sure to keep your pet free from fleas or ticks. (Also read: Preventing Dog Bites: How to Understand a Dog’s Body Language and Spot the First Signs of Aggression
“Even though the monsoon brings us cool temperatures and beautiful landscapes, this season also brings health problems. Like us humans who catch cold and suffer from sore throats when the rains fall, our pets also tend to suffer from low immunity. While allergies related to seasonal changes are inevitable, there are steps you can take to ensure your pet stays healthy,” says Garima Kaushal, co-founder of Sploot.
1. Give them fresh food
A warm bowl of nutritionally balanced food filled with the goodness of seasonal grown fruits and vegetables is the easiest and best way to stay healthy. When feeding meat, make sure it is completely cleaned and thoroughly cooked.
2. Keep Them Active
Then make them move. Monsoons are no reason to slack off and skip walks. Get a raincoat for you and your pet and head out to enjoy the good weather. Let them walk, run and play and boost their immunity naturally. If this is not possible for you, consider hiring a professional walker.
3. Veterinary examinations
Temperature changes are unpredictable and can lead to colds and fevers. So, keep your veterinarian in the loop and schedule routine checkups.
4. Vaccinations and probiotics
Stay up to date on your pet’s vaccinations and also consider including probiotics in their meal for better immunity and gut health.
5. Check for fleas and ticks
Be sure to check them regularly for fleas or ticks. It’s best to keep the house and all their belongings clean and dry (including their fur and paws). Although their daily walks are important, be sure to clean their paws afterward. Alternatively, you can keep them engaged with indoor activities like puzzles, mazes, games and enrichment toys.
