It hasn’t even been a few months since a pit bull mauled an 82-year-old lady to death in Lucknowand another dog, a Rottweiler, was handed over to the city municipality because it attacked its owners.
The family, who lives in Sector 14 of Indira Nagar in Lucknow, called the municipality after becoming fed up with the aggressive nature of the dog they had kept as a pet.
What
The family complained that the dog had recently become violent towards family members. The family was so terrified of the dog that they kept him outside the house for hours to avoid being attacked or abused.
Finally, the family informed the Lucknow Nagar Nigam and a team from the Nagar Nigam came to take custody of the dog.
This is not the first incident
However, this is not the first time that a Rottweiler has turned against its owner. A few years ago, two Rottweilers from Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu, mauled their owner to death while he was going to feed them.
Two other recent incidents:
- In January 2021, two Rottweilers attacked and killed a 58-year-old laborer on a farm near Chidambaram, Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. It was reported that the two dogs chased the man, attacked him and tore off his ear after their food was delayed.
- In 2019two rottweilers mauled a 68-year-old woman to death in Avadi, Chennai.
Should you keep Rottweilers as pets?
A veterinary doctor who dailyO spoke, clearly rejected the idea of keeping a Rottweiler as a pet. “Family-daar nahi hai (These are not family types). He is so dangerous that you never know when he will turn on his owner,” said Anil Singh, assistant surgeon at Baadshahbagh Veterinary Polyclinic, Lucknow.
“The breed is not that big. It’s another thing if the purpose of keeping one is for guarding purposes,” he said.
I asked him if any family would like to adopt a Rottweiler dog, since they would be training it, Anil Singh replied: “Nahi Rakhna Chahiye (they shouldn’t keep one). The dog can attack at any time if it loses its calm. The dog is not good at receiving commands like, for example, a Labrador or a German Shepherd. Order itni achhi nahi aati hai. Jo Baat Labrador or German Shepherd mein hai, wo baat nahi hai“.
“My personal opinion is that if you have children or elderly people at home, it is better not to keep this dog,” said Anil Singh.
When asked about his personal experience with the Rottweiler dog, when he went to visit him in homes, he said it was never good. “Bahut mushkil mein dekhte dete hai, ya to kisi cage my karo grouponly then we can give them injections, otherwise it is very difficult. Bahut si baar à aisa hua hai ki waapas aana pada hai bina kuch kiye (There were many times when I had to return without giving any treatment to the dog due to its aggression when it saw a stranger),” Singh said.
“But there are also cases where dogs are very well trained but they only let their owners touch them, not strangers like us. It also depends on how you raised him since he was a child,” Singh said. .
Training is extremely important: Ultimately, it all depends on how you train a Rottweiler. And according to experts, training isn’t just about hiring a trainer and leaving everything up to the person. It’s about how you, as the owner, blend with the dog.
A Rottweiler owner who dailyO the interlocutor agreed that it is a hunting dog with an aggressive character; but he also said that if you train him well you can keep him.
“I have had a rottweiler for four years and nothing like this has happened so far,” said Umang Mishra, a rottweiler owner in Triveni Nagar, Lucknow.
When asked if his Rottweiler had ever attacked him, he replied: “No, never. For any dog, training is a necessity, but in the case of a Rottweiler, it becomes a necessity because by nature , he’s a hunting dog.”
What to keep in mind before getting a dog
- Determine what you are looking for in a dog
- Start training the dog from a young age
- Don’t let strangers near your dog
- If it’s a Rottweiler, don’t let strangers pet it if you’re not around.
- Tire them when they become aggressive
Point to remember: It’s not a bad dog, it’s bad training.
