“My parents absolutely ruin my dog. I love that I can take Eddie to their house and leave him there when I have to leave town, but when he comes home, it’s like all his training is gone!

Here’s what You Tell your parents when you ask them to look after your dog in your absence:
-
Eddie eat at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
-
He gets a cup at home and a cup in the evening. No leftovers or table food.
-
Eddie is forbidden on the furniture.
-
Make sure Eddie is sitting before putting his leash on him.
-
No rawhide chews and no squeaky toys. The rawhide makes him sick and he eats the squeaker.
-
Don’t do it answer at him when he barks to get your attention. This will only make things worse.
-
Absolutely not jump on anyone.
Here’s what your parents actually do with your dog while you are away:
Eddie’s food dish is preserved complete all day.
“He didn’t eat in the morning, so we left that out for him. This way he could take care of it whenever he wanted. And he kept us company while we watched Jeopardy, so we gave him a snack or two. What harm could it do?
Eddie curls up on any unoccupied spot sofa or chair.
“So why shouldn’t he be comfortable while watching TV with us?
Eddie steps back when the leash comes out and runs everywhere while being chased to put on the leash.
“It’s a little game we play – Eddie and I. We’re having a good time. He likes that!”
Rawhide chewed up and squeaky cheap toys litter the ground.
“We I go to the dollar store once a week and they sold three for a dollar so I couldn’t resist. Look how much fun Eddie is having with them!
Eddie barking for eating, attracting attention, playing, going out and entering.
“How else is he going to let me know what he needs??!
Eddie jumped up on everyone.
“He’s so cute – he just wants to cuddle with us!” »
Frustrating? Yes.
Is there anything you can do about this? No.
Do not even try to get your parents to adhere to your dog guidelines or any of the training goals that you and your dog have worked so hard to achieve. Your best bet is to bring him into their home with acceptable toys, chews, and bedding, then say goodbye.
Unless you pay your parents to take care of Eddie, it’s not their job to follow your rules. It’s their job to keep Eddie safe and happy until you return. Be relieved that he didn’t gain too much weight, say thank you to your loving parents, take your dog home and start training again. He’ll remember it pretty quickly what happens at grandma and grandpa, stays at grandma and grandpa.
