In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Embrace Pet Insurance (Embrace) announced the most popular Irish pet names in its database along with fun facts about Irish dog breeds.
According to Embrace,1 Irish alcohol brands are one of the leading contenders for Irish animal names with almost 200 animals named Guinness, 3 named Harp after the Irish lager and one Smithwick, named after the popular Irish beer of red beer style. The database also identified 400 dogs and cats named Whiskey and more than 150 named Jameson.
Clover, meaning meadow flower, is the name of more than 230 pets, and Finnigan, the Gaelic name meaning “little beauty,” but for more than 1,180 pets, they are simply Finn. The other most common Irish animal names are 6 animals named Ireland, 85 animals named Dublin, and only 1 Galaway. The release also said there are nearly 2,000 pets named Bailey, 1,100 Murphy and nearly 630 Lucky.
In addition to popular pet names, Embrace also shared fun facts about Irish setters, Irish wolfhounds, and Irish terriers. Setters are spirited and best known for their red coats. These pets are known to be great for families because they are gentle in character. Several presidents have had this breed as a pet, including Presidents Nixon, Truman and Regan.
Built like greyhounds, Irish Wolfhounds have a shaggy, muscular coat. Wolfdogs can run fast and males can grow nearly 3 feet tall. Embrace shared that wolfdogs stood and fought alongside the Celts as early as 600 BC. The last Irish dog breed featured by Embrace was the Irish Terrier. The Irish Terrier is a medium-sized dog that is the only one to have a fiery red coat. Bold and courageous, these dogs are also known for being actor Clint Eastwood’s dog of choice during his heyday, according to the release.1
