News week recently interviewed Leigh Siegfried, animal behaviorist and founder of Opportunity Barks, a dog training organizationhighlighting the pros and cons of this evolving trend.

The statistics are compelling: In the United States, 66% of households own pets, with dogs being the most popular choice. From an employer’s perspective, accommodating dogs in the workplace is more than just a perk; he demonstrates compassion and flexibility, making the company a more attractive place to work and helping to reduce turnover rates. A 2021 study titled “Dogs in the Workplace: A Multiple Case Study” found that employees perceive accepted animals policies as privileges, leading to a favorable assessment of their companies. The study also highlighted the crucial role of such policies in employee retention and acquisition.
Having dogs in the office goes beyond individual benefits: it also fosters a sense of community and social cohesion. According to the aforementioned 2021 study, dogs moving around the office stimulate interactions between employees from different departments and different levels of authority. This interaction fills gaps that typically could not be filled during a normal workday, improving collaboration and camaraderie among colleagues.
Navigating Legal Considerations
While the idea of having dogs in the workplace is appealing, employers need to take into account certain legal considerations before implementing dog-friendly policies. While there is no federal law banning dogs in the workplace, it ultimately depends on each company’s policies.
Concerning service animals, employers must follow specific laws, although these regulations can be complex. Discrimination against people with disabilities is strictly prohibited and employers must provide reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Although dogs are generally accepted as service animals, employers should explore all reasonable accommodation options to meet the needs of their employees.

Bringing dogs into the workplace requires preparation and understanding on the part of employers and employees. Leigh Siegfried highlights the importance of designating dog-only areas within the office to ensure a harmonious environment. Additionally, open communication channels should be established for employees who may have concerns regarding the presence of dogs. As for human companions, it’s crucial to make sure their pups are well-prepared for the office.
The Future of Dogs in the Workplace
