A dog was abandoned on a Maryland sidewalk last month, with nothing but her food bowls, patiently waiting for her human. who never came back. This story highlights the importance of pet adoption.
THE abandoned doglater named Flora, is a mix of terrier and American bulldog, and her ordeal took place in Prince George’s County, near Washington, DC. The circumstances surrounding his abandonment shocked animal welfare workers and touched the hearts of countless people who learned of his fate.
Flora’s story caught the attention of the Humane Society of Prince George’s County, which shared her photo on its Facebook page on September 22.
Fortunately, the same day, 4-year-old Flora was rescued and found in fair condition. She was immediately taken to the Prince George’s County Animal Services and Adoption Center, where her road to recovery began.
According to Prince George’s County Public Information Officer Linda Lowe, Flora arrived at the shelter in a state of fear and showed signs that she had been mated multiple times. It is a tragic reminder of the hardships many animal companions endure when they are abandoned or neglected by their humans. However, there is hope for Flora and other animals like her. Recently, Flora was picked up by one of the county’s rescue partners and is now ready to begin a new chapter in her life: a forever home where she can experience love, care and stability.
Flora’s story is just one of millions of heartbreaking stories of abandoned animal companions. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 6.3 million animal companions are surrendered to U.S. shelters each year, an average of about 17,260 pets per day. These figures reveal the importance of spaying and neutering and ensure pets receive appropriate care throughout their lives.
